Arthroscopy of the knee joint has become an integral part of modern surgery. It has revolutionised the treatment of knee damage and is now one of the most frequently performed arthroscopies. The causes are usually meniscus damage, cartilage damage and cruciate ligament ruptures.
Knee arthroscopy usually only requires two incisions just a few millimetres in size for the operation. The so-called arthroscope with camera and lighting is inserted into the knee joint through one of these incisions, allowing the inside of the knee joint, including all important structures such as the meniscus, cartilage and cruciate ligament, to be precisely assessed on a monitor.
Existing joint damage is repaired using special instruments that are inserted into the knee joint via a second small access. Experienced surgeons can thus operate on a wide range of injuries to the knee joint and treat them with a high degree of precision.
Timely treatment with arthroscopy can prevent long-term knee disorders and permanent restrictions. In particular, the triggers and causes of knee osteoarthritis can be remedied in good time before the knee joint becomes stiff and immobile due to wear and tear.
