REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

Regenerative medicine is used in orthopaedics primarily for joint and tendon problems in order to promote the body’s own healing process.

WHAT DOES REGENERATIVE MEDICINE MEAN?

Regenerative medicine refers to medical approaches that utilise the body’s own regenerative mechanisms to repair or replace tissue.

PRP therapy

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) describes an advanced therapy in the treatment of sports injuries, degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis and torn tendons or ligaments.

In the treatment of sports injuries, PRP can help to shorten the healing time and promote the regeneration of injured tissue. In degenerative joint diseases, PRP can help to reduce inflammation and slow down the progression of the disease.

PRP is based on the use of the body’s own blood, which is processed in a special procedure to obtain a high concentration of platelets, which are blood cells that play a crucial role in blood clotting and the healing of tissue damage. They contain growth factors and other proteins that promote cell regeneration and tissue repair. By concentrating these platelets in PRP, the aim is to potentially improve tissue healing and regeneration.

The process of PRP treatment begins with the collection of a blood sample from the patient. This sample is then centrifuged in a special rotor to separate the different components of the blood. The resulting PRP, which has a higher concentration of platelets than normal blood plasma, is then extracted using an optical sensor and used for the treatment.

Areas of application of prp therapy

In orthopaedics, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is used for a variety of conditions and injuries, particularly in the following specific areas of application:

Sports injuries
PRP is commonly used for acute sports injuries such as tendon and ligament tears, muscle strains and tears, and overuse injuries. By injecting PRP into the injured tissue, the healing time can be shortened by accelerating the regeneration of the tissue.

Osteoarthritis
PRP is often used as an alternative treatment option for degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis. It can help reduce inflammation, relieve pain and slow the progression of the disease by promoting the regeneration of cartilage and other tissues.

Spinal disorders
PRP can also be used to treat various spinal conditions, including herniated discs, facet joint arthritis and other degenerative changes in the spine. Injecting PRP into the affected areas can relieve pain and improve function by promoting the regeneration of discs, ligaments and other structures.

Orthopaedic surgery
In orthopaedic surgery, PRP is often used as a complementary treatment method to improve healing after operations such as joint replacement, tendon reconstruction and bone fractures. PRP can help reduce the risk of complications, accelerate wound healing and improve the long-term function of the operated area.

Knee arthroscopy
PRP is often used in conjunction with arthroscopic knee surgery to promote healing after meniscus or cartilage surgery. The injection of PRP can help to reduce the formation of scar tissue, improve cartilage regeneration and shorten the post-operative recovery time

These specific applications demonstrate the versatility of PRP’s ability to support healing and regeneration in a variety of orthopaedic conditions and injuries.
