Spinal column treatment methods

Pain in the spine and surrounding muscles requires an interdisciplinary treatment regime. In collaboration with our physiotherapy and training therapist colleagues, we design an individual treatment plan for you and accompany you on your way to freedom from pain. Of course, this is preceded by a detailed examination and, if necessary, the use of imaging procedures (X-ray, MRI) to confirm the diagnosis.

At ECOM® we have various therapeutic approaches at our disposal, which can be used depending on the symptoms.

REGENERATIVE AND INTERVENTIONAL TREATMENT

1. Trigger point treatment

  • Painful structures, especially muscular tension and hardening, can be treated with extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT). The advantage of this treatment method is that larger areas can be reached and no infiltrations are required. Around 3-5 sessions (approx. 15-20 minutes each) should be carried out.

2. Infiltration therapy

  • Infiltrations can be used as an alternative or in addition. The painful areas are infiltrated with regenerative substances and local anaesthetic to relax them and stimulate healing.

3. Injection therapies

To reduce acute pain and inflammation in deeper structures (facet joints, nerve roots or intervertebral discs), a mixture of a local anaesthetic and a corticosteroid is injected into the structure causing the pain under X-ray or sonographic control, ideally three times at one-week intervals.

As steroids have a very good pain-relieving effect but inhibit the body’s own healing mechanisms, regenerative substances such as autologous blood plasma (PRP) or hyaluronic acid should be used in the following weeks in order to achieve a lasting effect.

OTHER CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT METHODS

Physiotherapy

  • Moderate exercise is also beneficial in acute situations. Prolonged periods of rest should be avoided so as not to further aggravate the symptoms. Physical support measures such as heat and manual therapy are essential.
Once a stable situation has been achieved, professional analysis of the muscular imbalances is followed by targeted strengthening therapy at our associated rehabilitation centre. Here we are in close contact with the nebulising therapists and can thus provide optimal support for the healing process.

PREVENTION

  • Prevention and lifestyle adaptation play a decisive role in all diseases of the spine and musculoskeletal system. The development of complaints can often be avoided through regular sporting activities, targeted training, but also through a healthy diet and avoiding risk factors.

Ergonomic adjustments:

→ Use of ergonomic furniture (e.g. height-adjustable desk)

→ Correct lifting and carrying of loads

Regular exercise:

→ Activities such as swimming, cycling, core training

→ Avoid sitting or standing for long periods (change position regularly)

Weight management:

→ Healthy eating and weight reduction to relieve the spine

Smoking cessation:

→ Smoking can impair blood flow to the intervertebral discs and promote their degeneration
