The SIJ (sacroiliac joint) is formed from the spine and pelvis and is therefore the only articular connection between the upper and lower body. It is therefore all the more understandable that it is often the cause of lower back pain.
The pain is often caused by dysfunction or excessive mobility of the sacroiliac joint. This can be due to various factors, including
Trauma or injury: A fall or accident can overload the sacroiliac joint and lead to discomfort.
Pregnancy and childbirth: Hormonal changes during pregnancy loosen the ligaments around the sacroiliac joint, which can lead to instability and pain.
Poor posture and muscular imbalances: Poor posture and inadequate musculature around the pelvis can lead to dysfunction of the SIJ. Other degenerative processes, e.g. hip joint problems, can also lead to compensatory poor posture
Degenerative changes (wear and tear): similar to facet joint arthrosis, natural, age-related wear and tear can also lead to discomfort and pain in the context of SI joint arthrosis.
Symptoms of joint pain can vary greatly, but the most common signs are
Pain: Localised or radiating pain in the lower back, buttocks or legs, which may be aggravated by movement.
Stiffness: Feeling of stiffness in the lower back or pelvic area, especially after prolonged sitting or lying down.
Restricted mobility: difficulty walking, standing, bending or turning, especially on one side of the body
Numbness and tingling: Numbness or tingling in the area of the SI joint or along the leg (pseudoradicular radiation). Careful diagnostics must be carried out to differentiate this from a herniated disc.
At ECOM® we have a wide range of different therapeutic approaches and options at our disposal, which can be used depending on the symptoms.
In collaboration with our physiotherapy and training therapist colleagues, we design an individual treatment plan for you and accompany you on your way to freedom from pain. Of course, this is preceded by a detailed examination and, if necessary, the use of imaging procedures (X-ray, MRI) to confirm the diagnosis.
